With UK petrol prices on the rise, drivers are looking for ways to cut fuel costs. Experts at claims.co.uk have shared five practical hacks to help motorists preserve petrol and keep more money in their wallets.

Five Simple Car Hacks to Save Money on Fuel

1. Half-Fill Your Tank to Reduce Weight

A heavier vehicle burns more fuel, and a full tank of petrol can add roughly 5% to your car’s weight. By filling your tank only halfway, you lighten the load and improve fuel efficiency, stretching your petrol further.

2. Skip the Air Con to Save Up to 10%

As temperatures climb, air conditioning is tempting, but it can increase fuel consumption by 8-10%. Instead, open your windows for a cost-free way to cool down and save fuel during warm weather.

3. Secure Your Petrol Cap

A loose petrol cap can lead to fuel evaporation, especially in hot weather when petrol evaporates faster. This wastes fuel and may trigger the “check engine” light or increase fire risks from leaks. Always tighten the cap by turning it clockwise until it clicks after refuelling.

4. Check Tyre Pressure Regularly

Proper tyre pressure is key to fuel efficiency. Kwik Fit notes that incorrect pressure can increase fuel consumption by up to 20% due to added friction. Regularly check your tyres to save fuel and avoid fines of up to £2,500 and three penalty points per tyre for improper pressure.

5. Use Cruise Control for Efficiency

Frequent braking and accelerating waste fuel, with accelerating to 30mph using up to 50% more fuel than reaching 20mph. On motorways or flat roads, use cruise control to maintain a steady speed and reduce fuel consumption.

Expert Tips for Extra Savings

A claims.co.uk spokesperson said, “UK drivers spend an average of £1,051 annually on petrol. With prices rising, these simple hacks can make a big difference. Drivers can also save by purchasing fuel from supermarkets like Asda, which offered the lowest price at 128.9p per litre as of 17 June, per RAC data.”

Implementing these straightforward tips can help UK drivers reduce fuel costs and drive more efficiently.
