A new study by premium appliance brand AEG has shed light on the household items that UK residents find most intimidating to wash, with apparel items taking center stage in the top ten. From trainers to delicate cashmere and wool, many Brits are turning to online searches for guidance on how to clean their cherished belongings without causing damage. This article dives into the findings, explores why these items spark such concern, and provides practical tips to tackle laundry challenges with confidence.

The Trickiest Laundry

The research analyzed search terms such as “how to wash,” “can you wash,” and “is [item] machine washable” to identify the items causing the most uncertainty among UK consumers. While non-apparel items like duvets (6,654 average monthly searches) and pillows (5,243 searches) claimed the top two spots, apparel items dominated the rest of the list, reflecting widespread hesitation about cleaning clothing and accessories.

Trainers ranked third overall and were the most feared apparel item, with 5,187 average monthly searches. Many Brits worry about damaging their sneakers’ materials or structure in the wash. Jeans followed closely in fourth place with 2,840 searches, as denim owners seek ways to clean their pants without fading colors or compromising fit. Shoes (excluding trainers) secured fifth place with 2,643 searches, while delicate fabrics like cashmere (2,277 searches) and wool (2,130 searches) ranked sixth and ninth, respectively, highlighting concerns about shrinking or ruining expensive garments. Baseball caps (2,273 searches) and general caps (2,219 searches) took seventh and eighth places, collectively generating over 4,400 monthly searches for hat-cleaning advice. The only other non-apparel item in the top ten was shower curtains, with 2,080 searches, underscoring the apparel-heavy nature of Britain’s laundry fears.

Why Are Brits So Anxious About Laundry?

The high search volumes reveal a lack of confidence in washing certain items, particularly those that are delicate, costly, or prone to damage. Trainers and shoes, for example, often feature complex materials like suede or mesh that require special care. Denim, cashmere, and wool pose risks of fading, shrinking, or stretching if washed improperly. Even baseball caps, which seem simple, can lose their shape without the right approach. For non-apparel items like shower curtains, concerns about mildew or fabric degradation add to the uncertainty.

The study suggests that while modern washing machines are designed to handle a wide range of items, many consumers lack the know-how to use them effectively. Missteps in the laundry process can lead to costly damage, such as shrunken sweaters or faded jeans, which fuels anxiety. Proper cleaning is not only essential for hygiene but also for extending the lifespan of household essentials, making it critical to address these fears.

Practical Tips for Conquering Laundry Challenges

To help Brits overcome their laundry anxieties, here are detailed tips for cleaning the top apparel items and shower curtains from the list:

Trainers: Start by removing loose dirt with a soft brush or damp cloth. For a deeper clean, remove laces and insoles, place trainers in a mesh laundry bag, and wash on a gentle cycle with cold water and a mild detergent. Air dry to prevent damage from heat. Avoid washing suede or leather trainers in the machine; use specialized cleaning products instead.

Jeans: To maintain color and fit, turn jeans inside out and wash in cold water with a detergent designed for dark colors. Use a gentle cycle and avoid over-washing, as denim can wear out with frequent cleaning. Air drying is preferable, but if using a dryer, opt for low heat to prevent shrinkage.

Shoes: Brush off dried dirt with a soft brush. For canvas or synthetic shoes, use a mild soap solution or a specialized shoe-cleaning fluid for tough stains. Avoid soaking delicate materials like leather or suede, and always check the manufacturer’s care instructions. Air dry away from direct heat sources.

Cashmere: Hand-wash cashmere in cold water with a gentle detergent, gently agitating the fabric to avoid stretching. If machine washing is permitted (check the care label), use a delicate cycle and place the item in a mesh laundry bag. Lay flat to dry on a clean towel to maintain shape.

Wool: Use a washing machine’s wool or delicate cycle with cold water and a detergent formulated for wool to prevent felting or shrinking. Avoid overloading the machine, as excessive agitation can damage fibers. Lay flat to dry, reshaping the garment as needed.

Baseball Caps and Caps: To preserve shape, place caps in a mesh laundry bag or a cap frame designed for washing. Use a gentle cycle with cold water and mild detergent. For stubborn stains, pre-treat with a stain remover. Air dry on a rounded surface, like a bowl, to maintain structure.

Shower Curtains: Remove mildew and soap scum by hand-washing with a mixture of warm water, baking soda, or distilled white vinegar. For machine-washable curtains, use a gentle cycle with a small amount of detergent and add a cup of vinegar to the rinse cycle for extra cleaning power. Hang to dry immediately to prevent wrinkles.

Leveraging Modern Appliances and Care Labels

Modern washing machines often come equipped with specialized settings for delicates, wool, or heavy items like duvets, which can simplify the cleaning process. Always check care labels for specific instructions, as they provide critical guidance on temperature, cycle type, and drying methods. Using the right detergent—such as those formulated for wool, delicates, or dark colors—can also prevent common laundry mishaps. For delicate or high-value items, consider hand-washing or consulting a professional cleaner to avoid risks.

The Bigger Picture

The dominance of apparel in the top ten reflects the emotional and financial investment people place in their clothing. Trainers, jeans, and cashmere are often prized possessions, and the fear of damaging them can lead to hesitation or improper care. By understanding the correct techniques and utilizing modern appliances effectively, Brits can maintain their wardrobe and household items in top condition.

Methodology

The study analyzed average monthly search volumes from Google Keyword Planner over a 12-month period (April 2024–March 2025). Search terms included variations like “can you wash [item],” “how to wash [item],” and “is [item] machine washable.” The combined search volume for each item was calculated and ranked to determine the top ten most feared items to wash.

Conclusion

Britain’s laundry fears highlight a need for greater education on proper cleaning techniques, especially for apparel items like trainers, jeans, cashmere, wool, and caps. By following the tips above and leveraging care labels and modern washing machine features, consumers can approach laundry with confidence, ensuring their favorite items stay clean, fresh, and long-lasting.
